What to write in an anniversary card, plus love letter ideas
Messages to copy or adapt for every kind of anniversary card, and a simple way to turn them into a love letter.
39 messages ·

You've bought the card. Now there's a blank space above your name and nothing in your head but "Happy anniversary, love you." That's fine, and it's also a missed chance. An anniversary card is one of the few things people keep, so a few specific lines go a long way.
A simple formula works for almost any card: one memory from this year, one thing you love about them now, and one thing you're looking forward to. Three sentences. Below are messages to copy or adapt for a husband, a wife, a boyfriend or a girlfriend, funny ones, lines for each milestone, and a short guide to writing a full love letter if three sentences won't cover it.
If you'd like help with the middle sentence, the free reasons generator turns a few true things about them into ten reasons you love them. Pick your favorite and drop it in.

How to write a love letter
When a card isn't big enough, write a letter. It doesn't need to be long or poetic. One page, written the way you'd talk, will mean more than borrowed poetry.
Start with a memory. Put them back in a moment you both remember: where you were, what you saw, what they said. Then tell them what you love about them now, with two or three specific examples, the kind of thing only you would notice. Name something you got through together this year. Finish with what you're looking forward to, and sign off in your own words.
Here are some lines to get you started. Use one to open the letter, and one to close it.
- I keep thinking about the night we first met, and how I almost didn't go.
- I don't say this enough, so I'm writing it down where you can keep it.
- There's a moment from this year I want to tell you about, because I don't think you know what it meant to me.
- I was trying to work out when I fell in love with you, and I think it was the day you made me laugh in the rain.
- So that's the list. It isn't everything, but it's a start.
- Whatever next year brings, I'm glad it's bringing it to both of us.
- I love you more than this letter can hold. Thank you for being mine.

Questions people ask
What do you write in an anniversary card?+
Three sentences is enough: one memory from the year, one specific thing you love about them now, and one thing you're looking forward to together. Add their name and yours, and it's done.
What do you write in a first anniversary card?+
Something about the year you've just had. Mention a first: the first trip, the first home, the first time you met each other's families. Then say what you're looking forward to in year two.
How long should a love letter be?+
One page is plenty. A short letter full of specific memories means more than a long one full of general feelings. Write it the way you'd say it out loud.
Is it okay to use a message I found online?+
Yes, as a starting point. Change one detail so it points at your life, like a place, a pet's name or a joke you share, and it becomes yours.
