What to write in a Christmas card: 100 messages for everyone you love
Christmas card messages to copy or adapt for everyone on your list, and a three-line way to write your own.
100 messages ·

The cards are bought, the pen is in your hand, and all you can think of is "Merry Christmas, love you." That's fine. It's also a chance most people miss, because a Christmas card is one of the few things that gets kept, tucked in a drawer or propped on a shelf until February.
A simple formula works for almost anyone: one memory from this year, one thing you love about them now, and one wish for the year ahead. Three short lines. Below are 100 Christmas card messages to copy or adapt, for partners, parents, grandparents, siblings and friends, funny ones, short ones for gift tags, and gentle ones for someone having a hard Christmas.
Stuck on the middle line? The free reasons generator turns a few true things about them into ten reasons you love them. Pick the one that sounds most like you.

For someone having a hard Christmas

- I know this Christmas is a hard one. I'm thinking of you, and I'm here whenever you need me.
- Missing someone at Christmas is love with nowhere to go. Sending you some of mine.
- You don't have to feel merry. You just have to know you're loved.
- Thinking of you, and of the people you're missing this year.
- However you spend Christmas, I hope it has a few quiet moments of peace in it.
- This year has been a lot. I'm proud of you for getting through it, and I'm here for whatever comes next.
How to sign off
"Love" is always right, but the sign-off is a last chance to sound like yourself. Try "All my love, always," "Yours, every Christmas," "Love you more than the last Christmas cookie," or "From your favorite (and only) sister." For a partner, a nickname only the two of you use says more than any line in this list.
Add the year under your name. In ten years, finding a card that says "Christmas 2026" in your handwriting is half the gift.
If you find you have more to say than a card can hold, that's a good sign. A book of reasons is a Christmas card with a page for every thought: fifty reasons, one per page, written from your memories, with the two of you illustrated in the snow on the cover. See our Christmas books, from Our First Christmas to a book for your mom.
Left it late? The digital book is ready minutes after you approve it, so it works right up to Christmas morning. For more lines to borrow, try 100 reasons I love you or what to write in an anniversary card.
Questions people ask
What do you write in a Christmas card?+
Three lines is enough: one memory from this year, one thing you love about them, and one wish for the year ahead. Add their name and yours, and it's done.
What should I write in a Christmas card for my boyfriend or girlfriend?+
Something only the two of you would understand. Mention a moment from this year, like a trip, a joke or the first time you met their family, then say what you're looking forward to next year.
What do you write in a Christmas card for someone who is grieving?+
Keep it simple and honest. Say you're thinking of them and the person they're missing, and that you're there if they need you. You don't need to wish them a merry Christmas.
What's a good short Christmas message?+
"To my favorite person, from yours" or "Merry Christmas. Love you always." Short works best on gift tags. In a card, add one specific line about them and it stops being generic.
